The consultancy Prokaushali Sangsad Limited (PSL) realised the need for both quality lighting and employment for unskilled women on the remote island of Char Montaz. They set up the Coastal Electrification and Women’s Development Co-operative (CEWDC), and the 35 members assemble and sell photovoltaic solar home systems (SHS) to island families, and also run a battery charging service.
Char Montaz is a remote island in the Bay of Bengal, 18 hours by boat from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. People live mainly by subsistence farming, fishing and trading. There is no grid electricity on the island, although a diesel mini-grid in the market provides lighting and facilities for battery charging. Generally people rely on kerosene lamps for lighting. PSL, which had been working on other development projects in the region, saw the need to find out what local women wanted to improve their situation. Following a survey of local households, they set up CEWDC. Since September 1999, the cooperative has assembled and sold SHS to over 360 homes, as well as supplying NGOs in other parts of Bangladesh, and has run a battery charging service for poorer families using both photovoltaic and diesel chargers.

Powerpack solar review
Review of the xantrex xpower powerpack solar. The power pack solar is a mobile power pack that houses both ac and dc power outlets and features a 5 watt solar panel for green recharging. The unit is very well made and is slim enough to fit away in a corner or closet when not in use. The powerpack solar packs many high end features like, a 400 watt power inverter, 12 volt dc out, usb out and very bright led lights. At the heart of the powerpack solar is the 10 amp hour 12 volt sealed lead acid battery, which is good enough to provide a few hours of power to laptops, tv’s and other ac appliances. The battery can go longer when paired with low powered ac devices, like alarm systems and wireless routers. The 10 amp hour battery really shines when it comes to dc appliances. I was able to run a small 10 watt (0.8 amp) dc fan for well over 11 hours and still had usable power left in the powerpack. This means in an emergency, you would most likely want to use the dc ports and the built in led lights for many hours of use. I have used and played around with my powerpack solar for well over a month before I posted the review and have had noting less than an wonderful experience. The powerpack solar has served me well and was almost used in a power outage (too bad the outage lasted only 30 seconds). From my experience with other xantrex products and other mobile powerpacks in the past, I expect this unit to give me years of service before needing a replacement battery (5 years on average). One thing I am happy about is that xantrex offers a flat rate unit repair if your product is out of warranty and in some cases offers a reduced equipment cost if your out of warranty equipment needs replacement. I hope not to have to experience an emergency situation, but if the time and need comes, I know I have something that I can really depend on. To get your own powerpack solar, please visit www.amazon.com or www.xantrex.com for pricing and availability.

NEST Ltd, India, Solar lanterns – Ashden Award winner
This video can be downloaded here: http://www.ashdenawards.org/winners/nest NEST won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2005. To find out more visit the link above and check out the Ashden Awards Blog http://ashdenawards.blogspot.com
NEST is a private company based in Hyderabad, India, which was set up to develop a very small solar lantern, the ‘Aishwarya®’, as a safe substitute for the kerosene wick lamp. Over 65,000 lanterns have been produced and distributed during the past five years.
It is estimated that in India alone, about 100 million households use kerosene wick lamps as their main source of light. Such lamps produce poor quality light and unhealthy fumes, and present a serious fire risk particularly when used in thatched homes. Fluorescent lamps with batteries recharged using solar photovoltaics (PV), can provide much better quality and safer light, but the cost of such a lantern can be prohibitive.
NEST have brought down this cost, by making a PV lantern which is small and light-weight, with strict attention to quality of manufacture. By working closely with a network of dealers and sub-dealers, through whom they provide credit, spares and support, they have enabled very poor people in the most remote villages to buy PV lanterns without subsidies. Over 75% of the Aishwarya lanterns produced by NEST have been sold in this way, throughout the states of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The Ashden judges commended NEST for developing an attractive and high-quality lantern specifically for the poorest households, and setting up a financial and service structure which enables such households to purchase without subsidy and receive proper after-sales support. These achievements were made possible by effective management within NEST and their active links with subcontractors and their dealership network.

SSP (Space Solar Power) Analysis
SSP (Space Solar Power) Analysis
Original “whitepaper”:
My Analysis, Transcript:
The key economic factor in any space venture is weight. At $30,000-$15,000 / Pound. There is just no way that SSP can ever compete with low-tech terrestrial based solar power, which is constantly advancing in efficiency and decreasing in price. As long as spacecraft continue to use engines based on conventional physics the cost of sending a payload into space will remain relatively the same. Ironically, the propulsion problem is also an energy problem, so if we were capable to making an engine that can produce so much energy cheaply, it would be far more economical to use that technology to generate power here on earth, rather than send cargo into space.
The biggest weakness in SSP architecture is the necessity of shielding. i.e. protection against micro meteors and other space debris; Solar power = surface area = shielding = density = weight = cost. Similarly high tech = high cost. While the true value of solar is that it is inherently low-tech and therefore low-cost.
The whitepaper fails to produce any truly speculative advantages, the kind that you would expect, given the extremely speculative nature of the concept:
One thing I’ve mentioned before in other articles, extremely low temperatures allow for use of superconductors, but only from the point of the solar array to the earth’s upper atmosphere; so the value there is mostly negated. Not that they even bothered to mention this as a possibility.
As for incentives, they use the preposterous circular argument that the best justification for SSP is to achieve cheap and reliable access to space! The rest of the proposed advantages are far more absurd. However none of that matters because the annual global terrestrial solar fall is 800 TW (terawatts). With our current total consumption being only 15 TW, a factor of 53, it’s quite clear that space based solar power is nothing more than another lame ploy by the aerospace industry to appear relevant in a post-space-age world.
What exactly makes space so special? Aside from earth orbiting satellites I challenge anyone to name a single ubiquitous resource or product that is the direct result of our, or anyone else’s space program. Furthermore I’d even be satisfied with a short list of future benefits, assuming that we continued sending people and equipment into space for the next 100 years.
Although it’s quite popular to refer to any time period post 1957 as the “space age”, aside from lots of pretty pictures, we have yet to see any concrete benefits from our astronomically expensive exploration attempts. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against real space exploration. What I am against is our preemptive, stone-age version. It doesn’t take a genius to see that rocket propelled spacecraft are far too primitive and impractical for reliable intergalactic travel, even within our own solar system.
This is money that would be far better spent on physics research. Realistically, there should be a moratorium on space exploration until two key technologies have been realized. 1) Faster-than-light locomotion. And 2) Maintenance-free shielding that can withstand the extreme conditions of space.

Solar Energy; Secret of all of those millions of little Engines
Even back in 1938 they were dreaming of a clean and unlimited source of energy. Now in 2008, it’s finally time for us to become independent of foreign oil. If we want to do it sooner rather than later, it’s going to require some compromise from all sides. If we don’t compromise and get started now, then ten years from now, we will have no one to blame but our selves for the economic and environmental damage that will have taken place. So just pick a reason, whether its economic security, national security, global warming, or a concern for our environment, pick one, two, three, or all of the above, or maybe you have a different reason, it doesn’t matter as long as we all have the same goal of being energy independent.

What Is Solar Energy?
Solar energy is radiant energy that is produced by the sun. Every day the sun radiates, or sends out, an enormous amount of energy. The sun radiates more energy in one second than people have
used since the beginning of time!
History of Solar Energy
People have harnessed solar energy for centuries. As early as the 7th century B.C., people used simple magnifying glasses to concentrate the light of the sun into beams so hot they would
cause wood to catch fire. More than 100 years ago in France, a scientist used heat from a solar collector to make steam to drive a steam engine. In the
beginning of this century, scientists and engineers began researching ways to use solar energy in earnest. One important development was a remarkably efficient solar boiler invented by
Charles Greeley Abbott, an American astrophysicist, in 1936. The solar water heater gained popularity at this time in Florida, California, and the Southwest. The industry started in the early 1920s and was in full swing just before World War II. This growth lasted until the mid-1950s when low-cost natural gas became the primary fuel for heating American homes. The public and world governments remained largely indifferent
to the possibilities of solar energy until the oil shortages of the 1970s. Today, people use solar energy to heat buildings and water and to generate electricity.
Photovoltaic Cells
Photovoltaic comes from the words photo meaning light and volt, a measurement of electricity. Sometimes photovoltaic cells are called PVcells or solar cells for short. You are probably already
familiar with solar cells. Solar-powered calculators, toys, and telephone call boxes all use solar cells to convert light into electricity.
Solar Energy and the Environment
Using solar energy produces no air or water pollution, and it is a free and widely available energy source. Manufacturing the photovoltaic cells to harness that energy, however, consumes
silicon and produces some waste products. In addition, large solar thermal farms can harm desert ecosystems if not properly managed. Most people agree, however, that solar energy, if it
can be harnessed economically, is one of the most viable energy sources for the future.
