How To Make Cordless Drill Recharge Dead Batteries
THIS VIDEO IS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY !!!!
TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
How To Make Cordless Drill To Crank Charger
See how you can use a cordless drill as a crank charger to recharge batteries, even alkalines!
Step 1: A Clever Idea
It’s the holiday season and everybody knows what that means: lots of dead batteries. But, don’t throw them out, recharge them. Here’s how. A cordless drill can also be used as a generator.
Connecting the battery leads inside to a volt meter, and simply turning it, will show this.
Step 2: Obtain The Parts
All we need now is a voltage regulator. You’ll find the perfect part inside a cheap, outdoor solar-powered garden lamp.
The battery holder inside has a circuit board attached, which charges the battery from the solar panel. This is exactly what we need.
The rest of the parts cost about $3.00 total, and include a C and D cell holder, some alligator clips, and a length of wire.
Step 3: Attach The Wire To The Circuit Board
Although I prefer to sauter them, you can attach the alligator clips by stripping about a quarter-inch of wire, and using a pair of pliers to firmly clamp them into place. Now, attach or sauter the other end of the wires to the red and black leads on the circuit board.
Step 4: Make The Hand Crank
I made a hand crank from bending a metal bar that attaches to the drill just like a regular bit. Now, the cordless drill will work just like a hand crank generator. Attach the alligator clips to the battery post and we’re ready for testing.
Step 5: Test The Machine
Let’s start with a completely dead NiCad battery. With only 30 seconds of cranking, it’s already holding a charge.
But, what about non-rechargeable batteries? Here’s a dead AA Alkaline battery. It only takes 10 cranks to bring this back to life.
For the final test, I took two D cell batteries and charged them for about 30 seconds each, then put them inside my two-cell MagLite flashlight. They lasted well over half an hour before needing another charge, which is a lot better than just throwing them out and buying new ones.
Have fun and thanks for watching!

The consultancy Prokaushali Sangsad Limited (PSL) realised the need for both quality lighting and employment for unskilled women on the remote island of Char Montaz. They set up the Coastal Electrification and Women’s Development Co-operative (CEWDC), and the 35 members assemble and sell photovoltaic solar home systems (SHS) to island families, and also run a battery charging service.
Char Montaz is a remote island in the Bay of Bengal, 18 hours by boat from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. People live mainly by subsistence farming, fishing and trading. There is no grid electricity on the island, although a diesel mini-grid in the market provides lighting and facilities for battery charging. Generally people rely on kerosene lamps for lighting. PSL, which had been working on other development projects in the region, saw the need to find out what local women wanted to improve their situation. Following a survey of local households, they set up CEWDC. Since September 1999, the cooperative has assembled and sold SHS to over 360 homes, as well as supplying NGOs in other parts of Bangladesh, and has run a battery charging service for poorer families using both photovoltaic and diesel chargers.

NEST Ltd, India, Solar lanterns – Ashden Award winner
This video can be downloaded here: http://www.ashdenawards.org/winners/nest NEST won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2005. To find out more visit the link above and check out the Ashden Awards Blog http://ashdenawards.blogspot.com
NEST is a private company based in Hyderabad, India, which was set up to develop a very small solar lantern, the ‘Aishwarya®’, as a safe substitute for the kerosene wick lamp. Over 65,000 lanterns have been produced and distributed during the past five years.
It is estimated that in India alone, about 100 million households use kerosene wick lamps as their main source of light. Such lamps produce poor quality light and unhealthy fumes, and present a serious fire risk particularly when used in thatched homes. Fluorescent lamps with batteries recharged using solar photovoltaics (PV), can provide much better quality and safer light, but the cost of such a lantern can be prohibitive.
NEST have brought down this cost, by making a PV lantern which is small and light-weight, with strict attention to quality of manufacture. By working closely with a network of dealers and sub-dealers, through whom they provide credit, spares and support, they have enabled very poor people in the most remote villages to buy PV lanterns without subsidies. Over 75% of the Aishwarya lanterns produced by NEST have been sold in this way, throughout the states of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The Ashden judges commended NEST for developing an attractive and high-quality lantern specifically for the poorest households, and setting up a financial and service structure which enables such households to purchase without subsidy and receive proper after-sales support. These achievements were made possible by effective management within NEST and their active links with subcontractors and their dealership network.

SEEDS, Sri Lanka, Micro-finance for solar pv lighting
http://www.ashdenawards.org/winners/seeds SEEDS won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2006. To find out more visit the link above and check out the Ashden Awards Blog http://ashdenawards.blogspot.com
Sarvodaya Economic Enterprise Development Services (SEEDS) has financed the installation of around 52,000 solar home systems (SHSs) in rural areas of Sri Lanka.
Grid electricity extends to about 55% of Sri Lanka’s population, but to only 40% in rural areas. The infrastructure is gradually being extended; but there is a shortage of generating capacity, since the generation of power has not increased alongside an ever-increasing demand. The average rural family in Sri Lanka spends 19% of their income on energy, and many can afford off-grid electricity with a suitable credit system.
SEEDS works through accredited solar installers to identify potential loan customers. These loans enable poor households in rural areas to purchase SHSs, and receive the benefits of improved light, communications and entertainment. The monthly repayments are set at a rate which the household can afford to pay, and the loans are paid back over a period of one to four years. Local field officers employed by SEEDS collect monthly repayments, and also carry out checks and minor repairs to the systems. SEEDS has financed the installation of around 52,000 SHSs (out of a total of 71,000 installed in Sri Lanka) since 1998. It has also installed 13 micro-hydro schemes in rural areas and has given off-grid electricity to 370 families (comprising 1,800 people). A further 1,800 poor rural families have received loans to enable them to connect to the mains grid.
