This is obviously not a post light, but these solar powered ‘border lights‘ are great for marking boundries such as steps, edges of flower gardens, driveways and just about any place that mark out so that it can be seen at night. GamaSonic an Atlanta based company makes an array of solar powered lights.

As you can see these are very practical, aesthetic, and they require no wiring or complex installation. below is a nearly full size image.

Automatic solar charged Daftman LED Light

This the Daftman LED / charger light with an automatic solar charging circuit added. The addition is taken off a circuit posted at Talkingelectronics.com. The circuit posted there was for a ‘solar garden light’. I took just the solar charging part and added it to the Daftman circuit. This allows the circuit to turn itself off when the solar cell is charging in sunlight and then automatically turns on the LEDs when it gets dark. This now makes the device just like a regular ‘solar garden light’ only while it is running the LEDs at night , it is also recovering some of the energy into a second battery. This automatic solar charger part should also work on a Joule Thief circuit.

Scale Model Solar System Drive

This video was shot by two of my students, Mike Johnson and Ryan Lucido, for a project in last year’s astronomy class. It uses the scale 1 AU = 93 million miles = 1 foot. First you see the solar system to scale, then they set off on a car trip in accelerated time to show how far the nearest star would be. This really drives home how far 4 light years is compared to the solar system.

Solar Smoking + Glass Lovers Delight

I decided to make a video with only solar snaps, and once I was outside the sunlight was making the colors in the glass pop super gnarly so it morphed into a video of solar snaps and glass montage… but I think you’ll like it. SupraRZ95 is featured again along with some of his glass to add to the eye candy. Peace.

CAUTION: I’ve come to realize that my videos are sometimes inspiring, so if you decide to do this PLEASE wear proper eye protection. Proper means a welders mask…. since most of you don’t have one, both a dark pair of sunglasses AND snowboarding goggles will suffice (yes both). The reason for this is you will be concentrating solar energy (light, infrared and UV) into a very small point, thus amplifying its intensity exponentially, this poses the risk of eye injury to not just the toker but any observers, ie: welders’ arc, floaters and eventually blindness. Dark sunglasses (preferably polarized) will help block the brightness, snowboarding/skiing goggles will block a significant amount of UV as they are designed for high altitude use… so use them BOTH at the SAME TIME. You only get one set of eyes, don’t ruin them just because you want to smoke with the sun and you’re unprepared.
